Dear Guest,

What’s wrong with cupcakes?

The humble cupcake has become a powerful symbol of token gestures to acknowledge women in the workplace.

While gestures of recognition, like the work afternoon tea, are appreciated, they have been criticised for obscuring real action in acknowledging the contribution of women. Read more from FCK the Cupcakes Founder Jasmin Bedir.

On the eve of International Women's Day (Friday 8 March), it’s worth reflecting on a survey released yesterday by Settlement Services International (SSI) which found that 6 in 10 women do not feel represented at International Women’s Day (IWD) events, panels or in the media.

When asked why, 52 per cent of respondents said that the women speaking at previous IWD events appeared to be from economically privileged backgrounds, with 45 per cent noting that these women didn’t look or sound like them.

That information cannot be ignored if you are organising or attending IWD, or any networking event.

Women’s Network Australia embraces diversity and inclusion. We’re not perfect, gosh no. But we do try to apply a diversity lens to our activities. Last night’s IWD event in Brisbane exemplified that, with our panel sharing their personal insights and experiences with racism, bullying and the stigma of mental illness.

It can be hard to discuss these topics – particularly in the workplace. You might want to take look at the resources one of our speakers, Jenae Tien, has developed to talk about, celebrate and understand the importance diversity plays in our lives. Her Deck of Diversity was designed for children but it’s a great resource for all ages. Best served with cupcakes!

Pulse Survey

In our February pulse survey, we posed three quick questions about business planning and how prepared your business is to face a potential disaster. The results were mixed. Two thirds of respondents reported having business and business continuity plans in place, and regularly reviewed. One third did not. Perhaps this is a timely reminder to ensure that you have a plan in place for when things go wrong!

This month, our three quick questions are about International Women's Day. Take the poll and we'll report back at the end of the month.
